Embrace® Neonatal MRI System by Aspect Imaging - Groundbreaking MRI INSIDE the NICU!
Aspect Imaging has developed the Embrace Neonatal MRI System, a new approach to MRI in the NICU. The system is designed to be placed inside the NICU, reducing the time and risks associated with transporting infants to an external MRI facility. It enables safer imaging of infants and provides easier access for medical staff. The system is acoustically quieter, requires no cooling system, and has low power consumption. It does not require a special safety zone or RF-shielded room. The operating and maintenance costs are much lower than conventional superconductor MRIs. Aspect Imaging aims to assist neonatologists with clinical diagnoses and improve neonatal care.

Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston has installed a new MRI system specifically designed for safe imaging of newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The system, called EMBRACE, is the first FDA-approved, NICU-dedicated MRI system in the U.S. It will enhance the hospitals research capabilities and expand neurocritical care for newborns. The MRI system is quieter and uses lower power consumption compared to traditional scanners. It will be used initially for applied medical research. The system was manufactured by Aspect Imaging and was hoisted into the NICU via crane.

The Embrace system allows for MRI scans of premature babies without the need to transport them to a separate MRI room, providing diagnostic-quality images directly in the NICU. The system is silent, safe, and emits a low-level external magnetic field. Aspect Imaging has received FDA approval for the Embrace system in the United States and has signed distribution agreements in Europe and North America. The company is also in negotiations for deals in China. Aspect Imaging has invested over $150 million in developing its MRI technology and is now working on a bedside MRI system for emergency rooms.

UPDATE: Aspect Imaging wins FDA 510(k) for Embrace neonatal MRI
Aspect Imagings Embrace Neonatal MRI system has received FDA 510(k) clearance. The system is designed specifically for neonatal brain and head imaging, and it can be used on neonates with a head circumference of up to 38 cm and a weight between 1 and 4.5 kg. The Embrace system includes a temperature-controlled incubator that can be placed directly into the MRI system to reduce movement. The system allows for urgent access to the neonates if necessary, with the baby typically able to be removed from the system in less than 30 seconds. Aspect Imaging raised $30 million in April to support the development of the Embrace Neonatal MRI system and a newer, stroke-dedicated MRI system.
