Intuitive Acquires Orpheus Medical to Expand Informatics Platform for Hospitals
Intuitive Surgical, a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery, has acquired Orpheus Medical. Orpheus Medical provides hospitals with information technology connectivity, as well as expertise in processing and archiving surgical video. The acquisition is expected to provide customers with ready access to and a deeper understanding of their data, which may help improve patient outcomes and lower total treatment costs. Orpheus will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Intuitive. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The companys product, MedicVOD, allows medical videos to be recorded and transmitted in real-time or saved to a database for future use. The system has already been installed in 25 hospitals, mostly in Germany. The use of video imaging in medicine can aid in future diagnoses, serve as teaching tools, and provide evidence in court. Orpheus Medical aims to provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for hospitals. The company has obtained regulatory approval for medical devices and has already sold its VOD system to Hot Telecommunication Systems Ltd. for $23 million.
