New back surgery aims to prevent future problems
A new type of back surgery called the TOPS system, developed by Premia Spine, is being tested in clinical trials. The goal is to improve the standard spinal fusion surgery by allowing more movement and reducing the likelihood of needing further surgery in the long term. The TOPS system is designed for patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis, where the vertebral bodies are shifted and compress the nerves. Traditional fusions lock vertebrae together, limiting movement and potentially leading to breakdown in other areas of the spine. The new device aims to keep pressure off areas above and below the fused segment. The results so far are promising, and if proven successful, the TOPS system could become the standard operation.

The event will be the first time surgeons in North America have the opportunity to use both technologies in an open cadaver lab setting. The company is also offering US surgeons the chance to join their US IDE study. The study will enroll 330 subjects and compare the TOPS System to lumbar fusion. Premia Spine licensed the TOPS System technology in 2011 and has invested over $100 million in its development.

Premia Spine Launches TOPS IDE Study
Premia Spine, Ltd. has launched its FDA pivotal study of the TOPS System, a posterior arthroplasty device for degenerative grade I spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis. The first surgery was performed in Pennsylvania. The company has been in commercial use in Europe for over five years. The IDE study will take place in 30 institutions and enroll 330 subjects. Premia Spine CEO Ron Sacher expressed excitement about providing U.S. patients with access to the device. The company has approval for 30 sites and is actively recruiting surgeons to join the study.
