Idan Ofer was born in 1955. He is an Israeli billionaire businessman and philanthropist, with interests in shipping, Energy mining and Sport. He is the founder of Eastern Pacific Shipping, which operates a fleet of over 200 bulk, container and crude oil ships. In addition, he is the principal of the Quantum Pacific Group, a Guernsey-based holding corporation. He is a majority shareholder of the Israel Corporation, a publicly-traded chemicals, energy and shipping conglomerate. Israel Corp. spun off its power, transportation & shipping units into a listed firm called Kenon Holdings in 2015. The company is primarily focused on growth-orientated businesses in the automotive and energy industries. Mr. Ofer is a controlling shareholder in Kenon Holdings. Mr. Ofer owns a 32% stake in Spanish soccer team Atletico de Madrid, as well as an 85% stake of Portuguese soccer club FC Famalicao. Mr. Ofer serves on the advisory board of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Dean's Council of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. With Richard Branson and others, he is a co-founder of the Carbon War Room, a think tank on climate change based in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Sammy Ofer and Aviva Ofer, and brother to Eyal Ofer.
