GM buys software startup that predicts EV battery fires
General Motors has acquired Algolion, an Israel-based software startup that specializes in detecting potential hazards in battery cells. The acquisition will help GM deliver high-performing electric vehicles (EVs) by utilizing Algolions cutting-edge battery analytics and prediction software. Algolions software can identify anomalies in cell performance and detect battery hazards, including thermal runaway propagation events. The software can also spot tiny changes that could affect battery health earlier than other methods. The acquisition was led by GMs Technology Acceleration and Commercialization organization, which aims to scout out emerging battery technology and explore investment opportunities and partnerships. Algolions six employees will join GMs Technical Center in Israel.

Software can predict battery explosions with one week warning
Israeli startup ALGOLiON has developed software called AlgoShield that provides a weeks warning before a lithium-ion battery catches fire. The software monitors key electrochemical indicators inside the battery to detect potentially dangerous fluctuations in current and voltage. ALGOLiON has projects with major corporations including Philip Morris International, Ferrari, Boeing, Airbus, Bosch, and Sunwoda. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency recognizes AlgoShield as a solution to mitigate hazards in lithium batteries. The company has received funding from various sources. ALGOLiON believes that the biggest potential for its software lies in the electric vehicle sector in China.
