Highmark Health is partnering with AposTherapy to bring a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option for knee osteoarthritis pain to patients. The AposTherapy device, cleared by the FDA, helps reduce knee pain and improve lower extremity function. The treatment program requires patients to wear a personalized device for one hour per day. Highmark Health aims to transform healthcare by driving better patient outcomes and lowering the total cost of care. The partnership with AposTherapy allows Highmark Health to offer an alternative non-invasive option for knee osteoarthritis treatment. The treatment is currently available to Highmark Inc. commercial health plan members in western Pennsylvania and will be explored for availability in other core markets in 2021.

Healthfirst New York Formalizes Coverage of an Innovative Therapy Called AposTherapy® Designed for Use in Orthopedic Conditions
Healthfirst, New York’s largest not-for-profit health insurance company, will offer coverage for AposTherapy®, a foot-worn device for treating knee osteoarthritis and low back pain. The device temporarily shifts pressure from painful areas and provides a neuromuscular effect by re-educating muscles. Healthfirst initially provided AposTherapy® treatment to members with chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis and later expanded coverage to members with chronic low back pain. The treatment program includes wearing the device for about an hour a day and attending physical therapy sessions. AposTherapy® is custom-calibrated for patients by trained clinicians. Recent research published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed pain reduction and improvement in function for knee osteoarthritis patients treated with AposTherapy®. Healthfirst has seen lower utilization of resources, decreased pain medication use, and lower per member per month rates with the use of AposTherapy®.

Partnership innovates for knee conditions

Apos Therapy catches the eye of ex-pro athletes
Apos Therapy, an Israeli company, has developed a non-invasive at-home system for reducing joint pain. The system, which uses adjustable pods in the soles of boots to create a subtle imbalance, trains the brain to re-position muscles and correct back, hip, and knee alignment. Former pro athletes, including Tom Satch Sanders, have tried Apos Therapy and reported immediate relief. Over 80% of surveyed Apos patients in the UK reported a reduction in pain. Apos is now training physical therapists in the US to use their system, taking advantage of the existing infrastructure for physical therapy. The therapy is not currently covered by medical insurance in the US and costs up to $6,000.

AposTherapy, a company that uses individually calibrated shoes to treat knee and back pain, has completed a $15 million financing round at an estimated $100 million company value. The company has raised $30 million to date and has 140 employees. AposTherapy is currently marketing its services in Israel, the UK, Singapore, the US, and other countries. The company is now focusing on expanding its business in the US market and plans to transfer its service activity to physiotherapy institutes while concentrating on research and development. AposTherapys treatment competes with pain relievers and complex surgery for ending pain, and the companys studies show that 86% of users reported less pain within five weeks.
