Israeli startup aims to save the planet from thirst using algae
Israeli startup Aqwind has developed a low-cost water treatment system that uses bacteria and algae to clean dirty water for irrigation. The system reduces the energy requirement in water treatment by 70% to 90% by using algae to generate oxygen for bacteria to decompose sewage. Aqwinds system is a net generator of energy and produces methane, which can be used for power generation. The company has sold 25 systems so far, including one in California and the rest in Israel. Aqwind has also partnered with Israels national water company Mekorot to clean desalination output. The treated water is clean enough for agriculture but not recommended for drinking.
