GitOps for Databases on Kubernetes
The article discusses the evolution of database schema management in the context of Kubernetes and modern DevOps practices. It highlights the limitations of traditional migration tools when used in containerized environments and explores various strategies for running migrations, such as in-app, init-containers, and Kubernetes Jobs. The article emphasizes the benefits of using Kubernetes Operators, specifically the Atlas Kubernetes Operator, to manage database schemas declaratively. This approach aligns with GitOps principles, offering a more robust, semantically rich, and continuously reconciled method for database management. The Atlas Operator simplifies schema management by allowing users to define the desired state, which the operator then reconciles with the actual database state.
