Codename One is an easy-to-use Java development platform designed to substantially reduce the development cost and time to market for cross-platform mobile application deployment in the cloud. The company leverages a lightweight technology technique to provide true cross-platform application development on all mobile platforms. Codename One allows Java developers to build native mobile applications for tablets and phones on all mobile operating systems, including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, RIM, and more. The resulting applications are true native applications and not HTML wrappers of any kind. Codename One is based on the combination of an open-source project in development since 2005 and a cloud-based solution that seamlessly converts Java binaries to native platforms and compiles them using the operating systems native toolchain.

Codename One Adds Support for Java Apps to Target the Universal Windows Platform

Codename One, an app development environment, can now target the Universal Windows Platform, allowing Java developers to target any device with Windows 10. This expands the number of targetable platforms to eight. Codename One users can develop applications in Java and create installable packages for various platforms without modifying the source code. By allowing Codename One to target UWP, developers can make their applications installable in 300 million new devices. The approach of targeting multiple platforms with the same source code may not become mainstream, as developers often prefer native app development. However, making it easier to port existing Java apps into UWP is expected to increase the number of apps available for Windows 10.

Android open source move could boost Java and aid in legal battles with Oracle

Googles upcoming Android N mobile operating system will leverage OpenJDK APIs instead of Googles own Java implementation. This move has been praised as good for Java overall and may help Google in its ongoing legal battle with Oracle. Googles Java implementation has featured Apache Harmony libraries, but the shift to OpenJDK could be the start of a settlement between Google and Oracle. Future releases of Android will still be based on Googles own implementation but will use OpenJDK.
