DeserTech Overview

The DeserTech community brings together startups, researchers, industry, international organizations, and policymakers, and is designed to capture the synergies among these actors to spur the development, adaptation and commercialization of technologies that enable sustainable living in arid climates, while simultaneously, turning Be'er Sheva and the Negev region into a global entrepreneurial hub for these technologies. The DeserTech Community operates at an international level and is located in Be'er Sheva, Israel, part of the worlds desert belt, and a living laboratory of science and technology. DeserTech builds on existing technological and policy research, such as Ben Gurion University and its Institutes for Desert Research, regional R&D centers, and leading startups and corporates in the areas of sustainable agriculture, energy, water, and infrastructure. The DeserTech community is a joint initiative of the Merage Foundation Israel, the Israel Innovation Institute, The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ben Gurion University.

Israel wants to bring 'DeserTech' to United Arab Emirates

Israels Environmental Protection Minister, Idit Silman, has announced plans to bring the countrys DeserTech climate technology community and expertise to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of its collaboration with Abu Dhabi through the Abraham Accords. The ministers discussed ways to work together, including through expert dialogues on climate issues and exposure of the Emiratis to Israeli climate technology companies, focusing on those engaged in the DeserTech ecosystem. DeserTech is dedicated to advancing the development, customization, and market integration of technologies to promote sustainable living in arid climates.

Israeli 'DeserTech' to be model for environmental cooperation in Mideast

Israel and Morocco are set to sign a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on sustainability projects at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. The partnership will focus on the DeserTech program, which encourages innovation and entrepreneurship to address desert challenges such as extreme temperatures, water scarcity, remote communities, and soil degradation. The program, which receives $3 million in annual investment from the Merage Foundation and the Environmental Protection Ministry, could play a critical role in the Great Green Wall initiative, a pan-African initiative designed by the UN to combat desertification.
