ElectricAlgae has developed a technology for generating new renewable energy using macroalgae. The Bioelectric Energy System (BES) harnesses the energy produced by macroalgae through their photosynthesis process and generates electricity for self-use by algae farms while simultaneously maximizing and improving the algae industry in the agriculture sector. The solution is based on the photosynthetic reactions of algae and the utilization of carbon dioxide from seawater.

Using electric algae, ancient proteins and more, start-ups seek to green the sea

Israeli tech companies Nayam Wings, ElectricAlgae, DisperseBio, and BaroMar showcased their sustainable solutions at the first Blue Tech Summit in Haifa. Nayam Wings is developing a wind propulsion system for shipping that can cut fuel costs and emissions. ElectricAlgae is commercializing research on seaweeds electrical current, similar to a photovoltaic solar cell. DisperseBio has developed a synthetic peptide that prevents microbes from sticking to surfaces. BaroMars innovation is to use the ocean floor for storing energy. The summit was organized by the National Center of Blue Economy, a partnership between the Israeli government and the European Union.
