Using seismic vibrations, Israeli firm aims to detect Gaza tunnels
Israeli defense firm Elpam Electronics has developed a sensor known as a geophone that can detect underground movement, specifically targeting the network of tunnels created by Hamas under the Gaza border. The company aims to develop a monitoring system that can locate tunnel activity and differentiate it from other subterranean noise. Elpam has previously sold tunnel detection systems to the Israel Defense Forces and is now adapting its technology to address the current threat. The Israeli military is also working on tunnel detection systems, with deployment expected to take one year and cost between $424 million and $565 million. Critics argue that the sensor technology may have limitations in detecting tunnels that turn or have multiple entrances.
