Novel Carotid Filter Aims for Stroke Prevention in Afib
A pilot trial showed that stroke prophylaxis with a novel permanent filter implanted in the carotid arteries is feasible for high-risk atrial fibrillation (Afib) patients. The Vine coil filter, developed by Javelin Medical, was successfully placed in 92% of patients without major adverse events. The device caught emboli in four patients, which were dissolved with subcutaneous heparin. The trial was not powered to assess clinical outcomes, but a single patient had two minor strokes unrelated to the device. The CAPTURE trial included 25 patients who were unsuitable for oral anticoagulants. The filter is made of super-elastic nitinol wire and has a circular cross-section. The trial was supported by Javelin Medical and a grant from the Czech Ministry of Health.
