O2 Subscribers Use Phones to Make Purchases, Access Info

O2 UK is partnering with Barclaycard, Nokia, Visa Europe, and other partners to test the O2 Wallet, an application that allows consumers to use their mobile phones for purchases and access information via NFC technology. The pilot project, which began in November 2007 and will run until May 2008, involves 500 existing O2 subscribers who are also regular users of the Oyster Card. Participants receive Oyster funds, O2 wireless phone service, and some are provided with a prepaid Visa Barclaycard account. The Nokia test phones used in the pilot have NFC modules for communication with RFID interrogators and payment terminals. The O2 Wallet application securely stores account information and allows participants to make payments at merchant locations. The pilot also includes the use of NFC-enabled smart posters and RFID tags for various applications. Feedback from participants will be collected to assess the usability and security of the test phones.
