Tel Aviv Tests Solar Energy Fabric That Shades By Day, Lights Up By Night
Tel Aviv-Jaffa is piloting a new eco-friendly system, Lumiweave, that uses solar energy to provide shade during the day and illumination at night. The system, which saves at least 50% of the cost of installing standard lighting infrastructure and 100% of electricity costs, was developed by Israeli industrial and product designer Anai Green. The pilot project is part of a collaboration with CityZone Innovation Laboratory, a partnership between Atidim Park, Tel Aviv University, and the Tel Aviv municipality. Lumiweave is also developing light motion materials and is in talks with NTA Metroolitan Mass Transit System to install the system at various stations.

Tel Aviv pilots shade-giving, solar-powered fabric that lights up at night
The municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaffa is piloting the Lumiweave system, an environmentally friendly shade and lighting installation, at Atidim Park. The system was created by Anai Green and won recognition in a global climate tech competition. Tel Aviv is one of the hosts of C40 Cities, a network of cities addressing climate change. The Lumiweave system is being tested for performance and may be installed in more locations across the city. The project is coordinated with the Cityzone organization, a smart city and urban tech lab. The system uses solar PV cells embedded in fabric to provide off-the-grid light and shade. It requires no electrical infrastructure and can provide lighting for up to three days without sun. The Tel Aviv municipality sees the project as a unique solution to climate change and shading challenges in urban areas.
