Israel firm plans surrogate cow farm near Mumbai to help boost milk output
AlefBet Planners Ltd., an Israeli company, is starting a surrogate cow farm near Mumbai to meet the growing demand for milk from Indias middle class. The farm will house 40 Holstein cows as egg donors and 450 surrogates that will carry the embryos to term. Calves born at the farm will be sold to Indian farmers. Indias milk production falls short of demand due to low genetic potential and a low-output system. AlefBet Planners is collaborating with Maxximilk and Indias Godrej Group, specializing in in-vitro fertilization of cows. The project is unique and complicated due to the need to combine advanced technology with the principles of the Hindu faith.
