Haifa-based NayamWings has developed a method to reduce emissions in the shipping industry by harnessing wind power. The companys technology uses airplane-like wings affixed to the deck of the ship to capture wind and use it for propulsion. The wings are adjusted autonomously in three dimensions to optimize forward propulsion. The company claims that its wings are three-and-a-half times stronger per square meter than simple sails. NayamWings system can lower emissions by around 15% on an existing ship and up to 35% on a new ship. The company is seeking to match a $1.5 million grant by the Israel Innovation Authority to build a full-scale prototype.

Nayam Wings, a start-up developing technology that reduces fuel consumption by 20%, has been recommended by the Israel Ports Development & Assets Company Ltd. (IPC) to join the Innovation Authoritys pilot program in government companies. The start-up will receive funding of around 3.2 million shekels from the Innovation Authority to complete product development and testing. Nayam Wings was founded in 2020 and its technology has successfully passed two POC tests. The companys business plan predicts that its product could reach a market share of about 18% of cargo ships worldwide by 2030.
