Nova Plasma develops and commercializes a platform technology that enables on-site surface modification of implantable devices via cold plasma just prior to implantation or use. The company's technology is relevant to a broad range of applications including dental implants, orthopedics, spinal surgery, bone grafts, and silicone implants. Nova's proprietary technology makes the surface of dental implants highly hydrophilic just prior to implantation. Its Active+ Plasma Capsule comes in a prepackaged disposable capsule that is sealed and sterilized at the factory. In the operating room or clinic, the capsule is plugged into a desktop unit that activates the plasma process, surface treating the implant. After 30 seconds, the capsule is opened, and the clean, hydrophilic implant is ready for implantation.

Faster healing with surgical implants zapped by plasma

Israeli company Nova Plasma has developed a cold-plasma activation platform that can improve healing and reduce infection after surgical implant procedures. The companys first product, the Active+ Plasma Capsule, modifies the surface chemistry of dental implants for maximum effectiveness. Nova Plasma has also signed a licensing agreement with a leading player in the dental market and is preparing to introduce Active+ later this year. The companys cold-plasma platform technology has potential applications in other implants, such as pacemakers and artificial joints. Nova Plasma has launched a $1.5 million financing round to advance its next product, Active Si, for modifying the surface of silicone breast implants. The company plans to start clinical trials for Active Si in October.
