New technique may prevent the gruesome deaths of billions of male chicks
Vital Farms, a Texas-based company that sells eggs from pasture-raised hens, has developed a method to determine the gender of a chicken egg before it hatches. The company hopes to make this technology commercially available within a year. The technology would solve an animal welfare problem as well as a financial one for egg hatcheries, which currently spend money incubating eggs for 21 days and then sorting out and culling the male chicks that hatch from half of them. The wide-scale adoption of this technology would be a win for animal welfare and the egg industry. Other initiatives are also working on in-ovo sexing technology, but Vital Farms method is unique because it does not involve puncturing the egg and is used on the day the eggs are laid.
