New Pears Challenge to address India's health woes
The Pears Program for Global Innovation at Tel Aviv University has launched the Pears Challenge, a venture builder program aimed at creating affordable healthcare solutions for low and lower-middle income Indians. The program will identify experienced Israeli innovators and entrepreneurs and provide them with the knowledge, networks, and skills to develop technologies that can transform the lives of poor people worldwide. The Indian healthcare market is projected to grow to $280 billion by 2020, making it a significant opportunity for Israeli startups. The program will help Israeli entrepreneurs learn about the needs of the Indian market, develop business models specific to India, and connect with Indian tech hubs, investors, multinationals, and healthcare providers. Applications for the program will close on November 29.

Pears Challenge returns to bring Israeli tech to African farmers
Tel Aviv Universitys Pears Challenge for Innovation and International Development is recruiting Israeli entrepreneurs to develop ideas that will help small farmers in Africa. The program aims to connect entrepreneurs and developers in Israel with Kenya to develop tech solutions for agricultural needs. The program focuses on smart farming, using mobile phones for training, access to expertise, crowdsourcing innovation, and connecting with markets. Last years program focused on base pyramid tech and resulted in the creation of a mini-farm called Livingbox. The Livingbox is a modular system that allows anyone to grow vegetables without fertile soil, running water, or electricity. The system uses fish waste and biogas to provide nutrition to the plants. Tel Aviv University has several teams working on projects in Africa, and the Pears Challenge encourages entrepreneurs to build businesses that can help the worlds neediest.
