The Israeli at the heart of Facebook's affordable Internet drive
Facebooks acquisition of Snaptu and Onavo allowed them to establish a foothold in the Israeli tech industry and expand their research and development efforts. The acquisition of Snaptu led to layoffs for most employees, while the programmers were transferred to Facebooks California headquarters. The acquisition of Onavo for over $100 million helped Facebook address infrastructure bottlenecks and reduce the cost of web-surfing on mobile phones. Facebooks R&D center in Israel is working on the Internet.org project and further developing Onavos product line. The company aims to provide affordable Internet access to billions of people, particularly in emerging markets where cheap Android phones are becoming more popular.
