Demand for ‘climate smart’ crops is rising as farmers battle abiotic stressors from saline soil and drought to heat stress. But breeding new varieties is costly and time-consuming, says Israeli startup SaliCrop, which is approaching the problem from a different angle with seed treatments that can help plants thrive in tougher environments.
SaliCrop will join the Israel Innovation Authority delegation together with 30 leading companies focusing on climate change.

Salicrop to Showcase Innovative Sustainable Agriculture Solutions at Morocco Innovation Summit
Israeli and Moroccan organizations signed business and tech agreements at the Connect to Innovate conference organized by Start-Up Nation Central (SNC). The agreements focus on areas like water and energy, agriculture and water tech, logistics, and addressing the shortage of tech talent in Israel with Moroccan engineers and developers. The conference aims to create possibilities that bring together the private and public sectors and help Morocco develop its own tech ecosystem. The event is seen as an opportunity for Israeli companies to connect with the rest of the region and for Morocco to draw expertise from Israel in developing its startup ecosystem. The conference comes after the normalization of ties between Israel and Morocco through the Abraham Accords. The countries have yet to establish full diplomatic ties, but have signed a trade agreement and defense pact, and launched direct flights between Tel Aviv and Casablanca.

Helping grains thrive in increasingly salty soil
Israeli ag-tech company SaliCrop has developed a non-genetically modified seed treatment to address the issue of salinity in crop production. The treatment stimulates an epigenetic reaction to salinity conditions, altering the DNA of the plant without genetic engineering. The company has seen increased yield by 12 to 30% and has expanded its facilities to serve pilot projects in Israel, India, Mexico, and Australia. SaliCrop plans to license the technology to seed producers and NGOs. The company has raised approximately $1.5 million from investors and grants, and will launch a Series A financing round in 2021.
