Under-road heating system to keep Europe's highways ice-free
Snowless, an Israeli-based engineering firm, has developed autonomous ice-melting technology for roads and pavements. The technology uses a mesh of metal ribbons embedded in the surface, which can prevent ice and snow from forming or rapidly eliminate them. It replaces harmful de-icing materials and operates at low temperatures. Snowless is currently optimizing its algorithm for use on roads with heavier traffic. The systems ability to react instantaneously to changes in weather contributes to its low energy consumption. Additionally, a Sweden-based project called Klimator-RSI aims to measure, model, and map road conditions in real-time. The project uses ground-level data gathered from vehicles to assess surface conditions and provide alerts to road maintenance teams. The technology is currently being tested in taxi fleets and is expected to be available on the market soon.
