Israeli biotechnology company Tissue Dynamics claims it can reduce drug development costs by 40-80% and the time required by 30-50%. The companys autonomous drug development platform aims to enable small pharmaceutical companies to develop and test medicines on their own, reducing the risk of clinical studies. It also makes it financially viable to develop medicines for orphan diseases. Tissue Dynamics uses a robotic system to create microfluidic models of human tissues, allowing for fast screening of drugs against different disease models. The company is currently engaged in its second investment round and has recently moved to a larger facility in Rehovot.

New drug-testing tech could drastically cut animal testing

Tissue Dynamics, an Israeli company, has developed a liver-on-a-chip platform that can predict idiosyncratic toxicity in drugs. The platform, developed by Prof. Yaakov Nahmias from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, can detect liver stress caused by drugs before any damage is seen. The company has licensed the technology from the university and spun off Tissue Dynamics to provide toxicology analysis of drugs and cosmetics. L’Oréal was their first customer. The liver-on-a-chip, as well as heart and brain chips, could reduce the need for animal testing, decrease drug evaluation time, and lower the cost of drug development. Tissue Dynamics aims to develop a model for human metabolism that mimics circadian rhythms to predict time-dependent toxicity. The company plans to offer chips simulating a pumping human heart and a human brain with functional neurons embedded with vasculature.
