Occupancy sensor lets you personalize smart-home settings

Israeli startup Intellithings has developed RoomMe, a smart-home super controller that offers personalized automation. The RoomMe occupancy sensor system identifies individuals entering a room and adjusts smart devices according to their preferences. The system operates hands- and voice-free, and allows for different settings based on the time of day. Intellithings has a two-pronged business model, selling directly to consumers and licensing its technology to third-party manufacturers. RoomMe is currently compatible with Nest and Ecobee thermostats, Philips Hue and LIFX lights, and Sonos and Bose smart speakers. The company takes privacy seriously, with all automation rules running on the users phone rather than in the cloud. Intellithings has a patent on its combination of sensors and mobile app controls.

Tyco International buys Visonic for $100m

Home security systems developer Visonic Ltd. has been acquired by Tyco International Inc. for $100 million in cash. Visonic will continue to operate independently but its systems will be sold as Tyco Security Products brands. The acquisition will strengthen Tycos intrusion security portfolio and enhance the solutions offered to commercial and residential customers. Visonic is an established leader in wireless security technology and has a strong presence in the European security market.
