The chipmaker moves closer to a deal, but final terms are still being negotiated.
Intel is in advanced negotiations to sell a majority stake in its programmable chip unit, Altera, to private equity firm Silver Lake. The deal is expected to value Altera at approximately $9 billion, providing Intel with a cash infusion as it faces financial pressures and competition. Intel acquired Altera for nearly $17 billion in 2015 but has struggled to integrate the business. The transaction marks a strategic shift for Intel, which is restructuring to focus on core strengths and potentially prepare Altera for an IPO. The move highlights growing private equity interest in semiconductor assets.
