QueenB Overview

QueenB is a nonprofit organization founded by computer science students who were disheartened by how few women enrolled in a computer science major. QueenB's goal is to give girls and women belief and confidence in their own abilities in order to increase the representation of Israeli women in the technology industry. QueenB's main activity is a mentorship and training program where computer science students teach middle-school girls code through weekly lessons during the school year. In these lessons, the students gain deep knowledge in writing Java code and building their own smartphone apps. The organization also offers workshops for middle-school girls, exposing them to technology and topics about gender bias. Among the sponsors and partners of the organization are firms such as Mobileye, Pico Partner (Kids), Dropbox and Jnext. In 2017 QueenB was a regional winner of the WeWork Creator Awards.

Western Digital, in partnership with QueenB, a non-profit that promotes programming education for girls, has launched a creative campaign to encourage girls to learn programming. The campaign, called TikTech, leverages the world of influencers and challenges on TikTok to make young Israeli girls understand that they too can code. The campaign aims to expose girls to the field of programming from a young age and plant the seeds that will grow the programmers and engineers of the future. Western Digital has been working with QueenB for several years through donations, volunteering, and direct collaboration.

QueenB and WeWork: Creating opportunities for girls in hi-tech

QueenB, an organization aimed at increasing the number of women in Israeli high-tech, has expanded its operations thanks to funding from WeWork’s Creator Awards. The organization, which was founded by two computer science students in 2017, helps middle-school students understand the opportunities available in high-tech and provides opportunities for them to get involved in the sector. The funding from WeWork has enabled QueenB to expand its activities for Computer Science university students in Haifa, Tel Aviv and Beersheva, and develop activity centers for middle-school girls in these cities.

QueenB takes a byte out of gender gap to promote diversity in tech

QueenB, a mentorship and training program for girls in middle school, aims to address the gender disparity in the tech field in Israel. PICO Venture Partners, a venture capital firm, has played a key role in nurturing the tech scene in Jerusalems Talpiot neighborhood. The company has opened two workspaces that house over 40 startups and has also launched the PICO Kids project, which aims to strengthen STEEM education in Jerusalems schools. PICO Kids offers in-school and after-school programs teaching children robotics, 3D printing, and programming. Over 2,000 kids from 34 schools are enrolled in the program. PICO Group, the parent company of PICO Venture Partners, is focused on raising the next generation of entrepreneurs in Jerusalem and has collaborated with the QueenB initiative to promote programming proficiency in teenage girls. The PICO offices recently hosted a roundtable gathering of Aspen Institute Fellows.
